Suncorp 2020: A year in pictures
2020 was a year like no other. Bushfires swept the country, rain turned to floods, while elsewhere the drought continued. Then COVID-19 impacted the world. As everyone went into lockdown, Suncorp remained resilient.

1 January: The New Year saw the continued devastation of Australia’s catastrophic bushfires. Suncorp deploys national resources to respond to the disaster and introduces unlimited paid emergency response leave to support employees volunteering during the disaster.
20 January: It’s all hands on deck as more than 500 cars per day are assessed at our AAMI hail assessment centre following severe storms in Melbourne.
30 January: Suncorp CEO Steve Johnston visits the Youngberry family in Pittsworth, Queensland, to learn how farmers are adapting to drought conditions.
30 January: One year on from the Townsville floods, our people are still on the ground – this time handing over the keys to new homes. More than 500 local trades were at the heart of our recovery effort.
21 February: Our teams visit the Club Malua lawn bowls club in Malua Bay, New South Wales, to follow building progress following bushfire damage.
29 February: Our people march at Mardi Gras alongside the AAMI-sponsored Broken Heel Festival float.
8 March: Suncorp women celebrate International Women’s Day. 2020’s theme, #EachForEqual, highlights the global benefit of gender equality: that an equal world is an enabled world.
13 March: Suncorp announces financial assistance support for customers impacted by COVID-19.
23 March: Most of Suncorp’s workforce across Australia and New Zealand start working from home due to COVID-19.
23 March: Our pets of Suncorp adjust to their owners' working from home arrangements. It’s a happy tail.
4 May: The Sawtell family are one of many Suncorp small business customers who successfully pivoted their business model during COVID-19.
18 May: Suncorp’s Davor Strbac is announced as Veteran Employee of the Year at the Prime Minister’s Veterans Employment Awards.
20 May: Suncorp Group's insurance brand for motoring enthusiasts, Shannons, holds its classic car auction online for the first time.
18 June: “Heritage Lanes” is revealed as the highly anticipated name for Suncorp’s new headquarters at 80 Ann Street, Brisbane.
29 June: Suncorp customer Daniel Franks (left) surveys his finished home in Chelmer, Brisbane, with architect James Davidson (right). The home was redesigned to withstand future flooding, after it went under in the 2010-2011 Queensland floods.
2 July: Suncorp Bank is named Money magazine’s Bank of the Year and Business Bank of the Year for the third year running.
4 August: During 2019–20, Suncorp employees raised more than $1 million for important causes – and Suncorp matched it, bringing the total to more than $2 million.
21 August: Suncorp announces our 2019-20 full year results.
21 August: Suncorp reviewed a 2019-2020 financial year that was defining and extraordinary.
10 September: Suncorp New Zealand is named a finalist for the Sustainable Business Network’s Climate Action Leader Award, for its commitment to renewable energy generation and reducing emissions.
21 September: Suncorp is announced as the Principal Community Partner of the Queensland State Emergency Service.
22 October: Suncorp hosts our first ever virtual Annual General Meeting as digital meetings continue to become 2020’s new normal.
28 October: Local street artists brighten up the building works at Suncorp’s Brisbane-based headquarters, Heritage Lanes.
29 October: This home in Mount Colah, New South Wales, becomes one of the first disability housing projects completed under the Synergis fund. Suncorp was one of the first investors in Synergis, which aims to develop 1,000 specialist disability accommodation properties over the next five years.
1 November: Our claims teams are on the ground following the severe Halloween hailstorm affecting south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales.
9 November: Suncorp launches our second Reconciliation Action Plan during NAIDOC Week.
11 November: Our people commemorate Remembrance Day.
14 November: Brisbane comes together for a night of light and hope, welcoming new Queenslanders through Multicultural Australia's Mosaic Festival.
30 November: Suncorp Insurance launches its state-of-the-art virtual claims assessment, making it easier than ever before for customers to lodge a claim online.
