It’s that time of year Queensland: ‘Get Ready’ for extreme weather conditions

“If it’s flooded, forget it.”

It's a phrase most Queenslanders would instantly recognise, likely after seeing it on TV screens and billboards during summer months. And it is an example of one of the impactful safety messages promoted as part of the Get Ready Queensland program.

The Get Ready Queensland program is managed by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA), the state’s lead agency for disaster recovery and resilience. And since 2020, Suncorp has been the official sponsor of the program.

From 8-14 October, all Queenslanders are reminded to take steps to prepare properties against extreme weather conditions.

“Weather doesn’t plan, but you can.”

During the 2024 Get Ready Queensland Week launch events in Brisbane and Cairns, Suncorp helped spread this year’s campaign message: ‘Weather doesn’t plan, but you can’.

Suncorp Executive General Manager Home Prevention and Protection Portfolio Anna Cartwright spoke at the Brisbane launch event about the importance of preparedness and resilience.

"As one of Australia’s largest insurers, Suncorp witnesses firsthand the devastating impact of extreme weather events on people’s lives, livelihoods and communities,” she said.

“Our purpose is building futures and protecting what matters. We know how important it is to be front and centre for our customers – especially after extreme weather events as they begin to pick up the pieces and rebuild their lives.

And just like Suncorp, our partners at Queensland Reconstruction Authority work to help Queenslanders understand how they can better prepare for extreme weather and become more resilient through initiatives like Get Ready Queensland Week.

Ms Cartwright was joined by key guests including the CEO of Queensland Reconstruction Authority Jake Elwood, emergency services and Get Ready Queensland and Suncorp Ambassador Johnathan Thurston.

Mr Thurston said: “Extreme weather can impact any Queenslander and the everyday parts of our life we take for granted, for example access to electricity and clean water, going to the shops, travelling to work or school, the safety of our family and home.

“By understanding your own localised disaster risk, getting a severe weather plan together for your household, and packing an emergency kit, you can ensure you’re prepared for any sort of weather event.”

Suncorp’s team will be on the ground at the Brisbane Emergency Services Expo on Saturday 12 October.
